Public relations and communications consultant working with environmental and community organisations
Clare Collins, Sustrans
I help people who do good things tell their stories.
I'm a freelance communications professional with years of experience working for great organisations like the Guardian, the Big Issue in the North and Groundwork.
I'm a writer, designer, tinkerer and problem solver – a multi-skilled extra pair of hands for your organisation.
I've helped to promote the very small and local... and organised major regional conferences and events at the Palace of Westminster.
Recent clients include:
Groundwork UK and a number of local Groundwork Trusts, The Mersey Forest, Sustrans, Cornholme Old Library Community Hub, Target: Wellbeing, Wild Rose Heritage & Arts and Healthwatch Blackpool.
Austerity is the new normal. Budgets for marketing and communications are minimal. Thankfully, there are new tools available that slash the costs of getting out your message.
Why commission an expensive website if a free wordpress.com or Squarespace site will more than fulfil your needs? Why pay for a graphic designer with thousands of high quality design themes available at low cost? How can you make creative use of social media and communicate more effectively with clients and stakeholders?
I can be your guide to this new landscape. I can help you find the right tools for the job, tweak them to your needs and empower you to use them effectively.
The landscape has changed but the need has not. Organisations still need to promote their work, learn from their successes and mistakes and pitch for income, whether to the general public, to a funding stream or to win a contract.
I understand the sector and can help you unlock your communications assets and make them work for you and the communities you serve.
You can achieve great things with small budgets, a bit of creativity and an extra pair of hands...
I'm a seasoned copywriter and editor with experience working on brochures, press releases, funding applications, websites, policy briefings and more. I'm great at cutting through complexity and turning jargon into plain English.
I've carried out a number of major evaluations and impact reports, working with clients to analyse quantitative and qualitative data and present it in an informative, impactful manner. And I'm a dab hand at positioning services within the wider policy landscape.
Derelict website? Don't quite understand how it's supposed to work? You might just need a bit of a spring clean from an expert. I've rescued plenty of websites from the graveyard, restructuring, rewriting and perhaps applying a design refresh.
Need a leaflet or report created in your brand style? Simple, clean, professional documents produced quickly and cheaply.
The e-newsletters I've produced for several organisations have consistently out-performed industry averages in terms of open-rate and click-throughs. I can also develop your social media campaign, focusing on excellent shareable content such as infographics and downloads.
Clean, simple but elegant websites built using easy to use content management systems such as Wordpress, Squarespace and Concrete5. I can work with you to achieve a great web presence for your project at budgets from around £400-£1.5K.
I carried out an evaluation of this lottery-funded two year Advice Service Transition Fund project, analysing data and conducting a range of additional interviews as well as exploring the wider policy landscape. The end result was a well received, professional document that assesses strengths and weaknesses and makes clear recommendations for the future.
I've helped Sustrans' Smarter Travel Nottingham project reach supporters through a monthly e-newsletter that has been well received by stakeholders and beats industry averages for open rates.
I also transformed their Wordpress blog into a much more effective web presence in line with Sustrans brand guidelines.
Reports were required to demonstrate the impact of Target: Wellbeing's portfolio of local wellbeing projects. I developed the structure, wrote, researched and designed this series of documents targeted at commissioners of services.

I provided Groundwork UK with support in developing aspects of a summer campaign about valuing our green spaces. This included the development of an infographic and a range of content to be shared on social media.
"Jon was commissioned by Burnley & Pendle Advice Services Consortium to produce an independent evaluation of our Big Lottery funded Advice Service Transition fund project. His professionalism, commitment and ability to ask the right questions ensured that the 'end product' was excellent. Given the timescale in which he had to work, made it exceptional. A professional piece of work and beautifully formatted."
Shelagh Linley, Service Co-ordinator, Burnley & Pendle Citizens Advice Bureau
“Working with Jon has been a godsend. He has developed a great tone and style that suits our organisation. The quality and turnaround time of his work is always very good and his advice on how to best reach our target audience has been really helpful and successful.â€
Clare Collins, Neighbourhood Smarter Travel Officer, Sustrans
"Jon Kedwards was commissioned by Groundwork to produce an independent evaluation of our 'Grow Blackpool' project. The finalised report produced by Jon was a very robust piece of work, which was high quality both in terms of its content but also in the very professional format in which the report was produced. The Evaluation Report has enabled us to further improve our project and has played a pivotal role in securing additional funding."
Mike Crowther, Programme Director, Groundwork Lancashire West & Wigan
"The new Rivington Heritage Trust website is a fantastic improvement. Jon provided an excellent service from identifying the platform and visual style, helping to ensure the site gave us the functionality that we needed, to support in developing content. The handover of the site was comprehensive and professional, and included instructing our team in the maintenance of the site, its structure and content"
